What Makes Our Collagen So Much Better?

Collagen that is extracted from bovine bone is the most abundant source, and the collagen peptides that are isolated from this source typically consist of oligopeptides that are approximately <1000 Daltons (DA) [3]. It has been reported that peptide chains of this size are more bioactive than regular collagen molecules and polypeptides [3-5]. Di- and tripeptides are even more easily absorbed than oligopeptides [3-5]; therefore, Physician’s Choice has added a digestive enzyme blend (DigSEB) to their Collagen Peptides Powder to break down the oligopeptides even further.

As a result, the hydrolyzed collagen in Physician’s Choice Collagen Powder is more effective than that in other supplements due to increased bioavailability of digestible peptides that are an optimal size (oligopeptides), and digestive enzymes including proteolytic enzymes (proteases) that break down the peptide chains into di- and tripeptides as well as amino acids. Research demonstrates that enzymes promote the thorough break down of peptides in collagen hydrolysate [6], thereby increasing the concentration of amino acids that reach the intestinal wall and the bloodstream. More specifically, studies show that the enzymatic hydrolysis (break down) of collagen peptides releases biologically active peptides that have potent antioxidant and antimicrobial properties that target joint problems and enhance overall health [7]. These findings are specific to hydrolyzed collagen, not regular collagen or gelatin [7, 8].

One particular study compared the percentage of enzymatic hydrolysis of several forms of collagen that were exposed to different digestive enzymes for 120 minutes [6]. The samples included: crude collagen, powdered collagen, gelatin, and two types of collagen hydrolysates. The results showed that after 120 minutes there was only a little over 30% hydrolysis of the crude collagen. This indicates that large portions of the crude collagen remain un-hydrolyzed and are not absorbed by the body. 

For the powdered collagen fiber and gelatin, there was an average of about 7% hydrolysis in the same time frame. It is argued that the high temperatures and grinding that is required to make the powdered form breaks peptide bonds and disorganizes the protein structure, thereby disrupting enzymatic hydrolysis [8-10]. Similarly, gelatin is typically obtained through acid of alkaline hydrolysis and this process can damage proteins [6, 7].

Interestingly, the result of the comparative study showed that the hydrolyzed collagen samples had the lowest percentage of enzymatic hydrolysis (1-3%) in 120 minutes.  This actually reflects the fact that hydrolyzed collagen is already comprised of almost completely hydrolyzed peptides bonds [6]. Furthermore, the enzymatic hydrolysis process that produces hydrolyzed collagen does not destroy its proteins [6]. This means that exposing hydrolyzed collagen to digestive enzymes ensures that nearly all of the biologically active tripeptides, dipeptides, and free amino acids are quickly released and absorbed into the intestinal wall, whereas portions of regular collagen or gelatin that are un-hydrolyzed in 120 minutes or less will be excreted from the body. 

The blend of both type I and type III collagen in Physician’s Choice Collagen Peptides makes it more effective than supplements that only contain one form, as type I collagen promotes hair, skin, and nail health, and the combination of type I and III supports muscle tissue health [1, 2]. In addition, hydrolyzed collagen is in the form of peptide chains that are much easier to digest and absorb than supplements that are comprised of regular collagen or gelatin [3]. The molecules that comprise regular collagen are too large to be absorbed by the intestines. This causes stomach enzymes to impartially break down regular collagen, which results in only a small amount being released into the intestinal tract and the rest is simply excreted from the body.

Therefore, the digestive enzyme blend in this supplement quickly and efficiently releases the 14 essential amino acids in the Type I and Type III Hydrolyzed Collagen, thereby promoting healthy skin, hair and nails, along with healthy joints, ligaments, and tendons. These factors make it more effective than regular collagen.
